"Death alone persists in this place."
This story is based on the real life events of 2 people, who were forced into a concentration camp in 1942. Lale, a Slovakian Jew, was forced to leave his family and enter the concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau. After discovering he spoke multiple languages, he was appointed as the tattooist, spending his days and sometimes nights, marking the prisoners.
He spent multiple years in the camp, witnessing horrific events and treatment of the prisoners. One day, he is to tattoo a terrified young woman. He felt instantly drawn to her. From that moment, they clung to one another, fighting to stay alive.
I read this book in a matter of days. This story was emotional and haunting. The struggles they had to endure were unfathomable, yet Lale never lost faith that he would one day walk out of there, with Gita. I love that this was written based on interviews between the author and Lale. His account of the events is very detailed and vivid. Although, the ending seemed abrupt to me, this was a wonderful story of love, loss and endurance. I really enjoyed this book. This story will stick with me for quite some time, I know. And a bonus... this is going to be a TV series and is currently in production, release date is in 2024.
