Book Review: Elvis and Me - 5 Stars

From an early age, I was fascinated by Elvis.  I was drawn to his energy, music and of course looks.  It was crazy to me that he was so famous and died so young.  It seemed so tragic.

I loved Elvis so much that for years, all I got for my birthday were Elvis themed gifts.  Beach towels, clothing, an Elvis Barbie doll, even a door stopper (that one was weird).

Then, in 1988, a TV mini series came on called "Elvis and Me".  I watched all of Elvis's movies so I was excited about this one.  Especially since it was from Pricilla's point of view. I was so focused on Elvis, that I forgot he had a life outside of the spotlight, that he was more than just the "King of Rock & Roll".

My mom recorded the movie for me, on VHS.  I watched that thing over and over and over. I had it memorized. To see Elvis from someone else's point of view, someone who was intimate with him, was blowing my mind.

I grew up and eventually grew out of my obsession with Elvis but I always remembered that mini series. I have searched for it on every platform, with no luck.

Then one day I saw the movie trailer for "Priscilla", a new movie coming out in November.  It reminded me of "Elvis and Me" and got me thinking... I need to read Pricilla's memoir!

I loved it! It was so amazing to read stories of Elvis and what he was really like, behind closed doors.  He was moody, charming, insightful, demanding and generous.  Elvis shaped Priscilla into being whatever he wanted her to be, from a very young age.  Priscilla, being naïve, would do just about anything for him.  She changed her hair, makeup and clothes.  She desperately wanted to hold on to him so she took the pills he took, read the books he read and took up the hobbies he had.

Their love was twisted and intense, but I LOVED every second of it.

Read it.
